OEwaves has recently developed a powerful system that utilizes microwave photonics techniques for automated phase noise measurement of ultra-high performance oscillators. The cross-correlation phase noise measurement system is fast and fully automated, and yields the spectral density of the phase noise of an oscillator at any operating frequency in the 1 to 40 GHz range. The system recently demonstrated by OEwaves operates in the range of 6-12 GHz. Oscillators at other frequencies can also be measured by implementing low-flicker noise amplifiers supporting the frequency range of interest. This homodyne based system is unique in wide frequency band measurement without requiring a second oscillator or locking circuitry, as required in the conventional heterodyne approaches. The phase noise measurement system has an exceptionally low floor, allowing measurement of the noise of ultra-high performance oscillators, as shown in the figure. The floor can be further improved by increasing the number of averages. The performance of the system shown in the figure has been calibrated through a comparison with the measurement system at NIST.
