About Us

OEwaves, Inc. transforms novel microwave photonic technologies, from concept to the marketplace, enabling new capabilities in communications, radar, and test and measurement systems. The company’s core technologies include the opto-electronic oscillator (OEO) and whispering gallery mode (WGM) optical resonator. OEwaves has also developed a unique cross-correlation phase noise measurement system for characterization of the phase noise of high performance microwave oscillators operating at 1-40 GHz. OEwaves was founded in August 2000 by scientists from the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) who developed the company's core technologies, the Opto-Electronic Oscillator (OEO) and the crystalline whispering gallery mode (WGM) optical resonator. The company has exclusive rights to over 80 patents and pending patents in these and related areas. The phase noise performance of the OEO surpasses that of conventional microwave oscillators by at least three orders of magnitude, creating a unique opportunity to impact a wide range of advanced civilian and military radar, communications systems, and test measurement applications.

The unique technology of WGM optical resonator with crystalline material enables ultra-high quality factor (Q) microwave and optical filters, and novel photonic microwave receiver architectures. These technologies, individually and in combination, will enable new architectures that provide a significant reduction in size, mass, and power (SWAP) requirements of high performance systems. The OEO platform escapes the limitations of conventional oscillators by employing an electro-optic feedback loop, which naturally supports frequencies in the microwave and mm-wave range without multiplication, and attains an extremely high optical Q that translates into exceptional phase noise performance. Oscillator phase noise is unique among component-level performance parameters in its ability to so directly impact a wide range of system-level specifications.

Ultra-high Q WGM optical resonators enable narrowband tunable filters and efficient modulators for photonic receiver front ends that have compact size, robust design, low operation power, and lower sensitivity to vibration and shock - all critical parameters to targeted high performance applications. WGM resonators fabricated with electro-optic material result in compact, high performance photonic receiver front ends for communications and radar applications.

Recognizing the existence of a critical technology gap in the oscillator, filter, and innovative receiver markets and the tremendous potential for OEwaves to impact a wide range of radar and communications applications, DARPA, ARL, MDA, NIST, ATP and other agencies have invested to date over $18M to expedite OEwaves' R&D program. OEwaves has also received over $2 million NRE funding from defense Industry’s leading systems integrators. Leading venture capitalists and Agilent Technologies have also invested over $12 million in these unprecedented technologies.

OEwaves employs world-renowned experts in its core technologies and has a leadership team with successfully proven business and industry experience. The company is headquartered in Pasadena, California, in close distance to resources affiliated with leading institutions such as Caltech and JPL.
